Contemporary alum-tawed pigskin, tooled in blind, spine with inked title; binding darkened and scuffed, with clasps now lacking and with leather torn over head and foot of spine (lacking at foot, with underlying vellum showing). Title-page with inked ownership inscriptions dated 1715, later institutional stamp in lower margin, and faint shadows of pencilled notations; front pastedown and one text page also with institutional stamps. Small spots of worming to lower margins of a number of leaves. Pages age-toned, with some instances of marginalia and underlining in early inked hands and occasionally in pencil (a handful of leaves in part III extensively annotated within text); a few spots of foxing, and one leaf with paper flaws partially obscuring a few letters. A big, solid volume.

A collection of relevant letters and documents in Latin and Dutch (“Tablinum dat is: Brieven ende documenten, dienende tot de Friesche historie”) is appended at the back. The volume is attractively printed in double columns (primarily black-letter), with an engraved title-page, 16 engraved portraits of Classical, medieval, and Renaissance figures, and a striking, full-page engraved coat of arms as well as decorative capitals and head- and tailpieces.

Moderately uncommon in libraries, with OCLC and NUC Pre-1956 locating only ten U.S. holdings (one of which has been deaccessioned), this is quite uncommon on the market.

Provenance:  Bookplate of “I.M.” (Isaac Meulman) on front pastedown, with his device and motto, “Grijpt als 't rijpt.” Meulman, a 19th-century merchant collector in Amsterdam, gathered an extraordinary library of Dutch history and theology, much of which was purchased at his sale by the Evangelisch Luthersch Seminarium of his home city.

•  Pirenne, Bibliographie de l'histoire de Belgique, 1232.   19th-century quarter vellum and speckled paper–covered sides, spine with very neatly inked title, author, and date information; joints starting from head, sides rubbed/scuffed with corners bumped, spine with inked call number and light discolored patch from now-absent label at foot. Half-title with small inked numeral in lower margin; lower edges of closed book institutionally rubber-stamped. One leaf with short tear from outer margin, touching shouldernote without loss of text; four leaves with lower outer corners torn away, not affecting text. Some instances of light offsetting; scattered faint spotting confined almost entirely to upper and outer margins. Front pastedown with bookplate as above, speckled with old staining. A strong copy with a pleasing provenance.  (24980)

A Roman edition also appeared in 1694, the year of the work’s first appearance; the present edition is more uncommon: We trace only one U.S. library copy of it.

•  DeBacker-Sommervogel, VII, 1079. Boards covered in music-printed paper from an 18th-century antiphonal, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Title-page and one other stamped by a now-defunct institution. Light spotting throughout, more pronounced to first and last few leaves; some corners dog-eared.

Quite rare: Via OCLC we locate only three copies in the U.S.

•  Medina, Mexico, 1680.   Contemporary stiff vellum; binding stained and lacking ties, and a little bowed. Text starting to loosen. Waterstaining to early and late sections, paper yet strong. Withal, a good+ copy of a scarce and important early Mexican medical-related item.  (14649)

•  Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, part XXI (Book Illustrations and Title-pages [by Peter Paul Rubens]), vol. I, pp. 154–65; vol. II, p. 443; Brunet,V,276-77; Schweiger, II, 912.   Late 17th-century plain calf; rebacked with modest blind tooling, and red spine-label. Late 20th-century private bookplate on front pastedown; early 20th-century private pressure-stamps in margins of first two leaves. With minor worming in upper inner margins of some leaves and some spots/soiling generally light and marginal, this is a nice copy.  (26571)

Lower (closed) edges institutionally rubber-stamped (no other markings). Pages age-toned, with offsetting and light to moderate spotting. All edges marbled.  (26086)

Provenance:  On the recto of the second front fly-leaf is a presentation inscription: "For my honnord & best frind, Master John Bulteel." The most likely John Bulteel is the one who was created M.A. at Oxford in 1661, and later served as secretary to Edward, Earl of Clarendon.

First two leaves with outer edges ragged; several with lower margins or outer corners repaired, in one case with loss of about ten words.
