Engravings by
the “Bewick of America”
Anderson, Alexander. Collection of wood engravings. [1855 – ca. 1890]. 32 images. Variously sized, 8.8 x 5.8 cm to 21.8 x 14.7 cm.
$350.00

Wide-ranging gathering of excised illustrations done by or attributed to famed American wood engraver Alexander Anderson (1775–1870), a pioneer in his field. The clipped images gathered here include such delights as “The Chinese offering perfumes, &c. to their Deity,” “Last Number of the Family Magazine,” advertising views for the Columbian Hotel in NY, cuts from Bentley's Pictorial Primer and other children's publications (in the case of the Primer, almost a full leaf being present), a few head- and tailpieces (some biblical), and numerous pastoral scenes. An unidentified historical work was clearly he source of several large cuts: “Ruins of Jamestown, Va.”; “Yorktown, Virginia”; “Washington's Head Quarters at Morristown, N.J.”; “Residence of President Adams, Quincy, Mass.” (signed Croome and Anderson), and others. Some of the unsigned images are very likely Anderson's work and some are connected to it, such as an example from the Wood's Almanac for 1838 — many issues of that almanac did contain Anderson engravings, although the 1838 did not. Some items were annotated by the original collector, such as the view of President Edwards' House, Northampton, Mass., labelled in pencil on the reverse “Anderson's characteristic N.E. picture.”
Altogether, an excellent survey of Anderson's career and a collection worthy of study.
Provenance: Ex-lots sold at Libby & SotheyParke Berent auctions; acquired by Seven Gables Booksore; residue of the stock of Seven Gables Bookshop (1930–79), via the son of Michael Papantonio (2009).
Pomeroy, Alexander Anderson, 1583, 1600, 1763, 1958, 2 examples from 2054. Varying degrees of age-toning and foxing, some items with pencilled annotations; the gathering in good to excellent condition. (25685)

Slaves, Shipping, Sugar
(Brazilian Commerce). A collection of 20 alvarás and other royal decrees relating to Brazilian commerce and administration of the colony. Lisbon and elsewhere, 1754-88. Folio. Various pagings.
$5000.00
The importance of Brazil to Portugal, brought home in a hard and
dramatic way when the Dutch took over portions of the colony during the period
1630-54, was further enhanced by the discovery in the late 17th century of gold,
and in the early 18th century of diamonds, there--in addition to the sugar and
wood that had domininated the colony's earliest lists of exports. This collection
of royal decrees (alvarás and other types) deals with treatment
of black slaves, regulation of shipping, administration of sugar and tobacco
monopolies, importing of wine and vinegar, and the constant and various problems
of managing colonial administrators and distributing/limiting their perquisites
and prerogatives.
In all, an interesting sampling of the types of decrees that the kings and
queens of Portugal issued in order to maintain order and discipline in the
ever-increasingly important colony of Brazil. The value of the documents sold
individually totals $6325.00, and the collection price represents a savings
of above 20%. Do note, please, that this collection is being SOLD
AS A COLLECTION ONLY, with no extractions or mixing and matching
as are offered elsewhere on this page.
The vast bulk of these decrees are bound in faux morocco
and faux mottled calf; those that are in wrappers or as issued are
carefully noted. All are in very good condition.

Records of an
Eccentric, Theatrical LIFE in the Gilded Age
Brisac, Norline Frederick. Archive of personal papers. 1875–1903. Approx. 90 items.
[SOLD]
Click the images for enlargements.
Collected papers of a
California-born, afterwards globetrotting would-be actor and bon vivant whose wealthy father heartily disapproved of his son's irresponsible lifestyle and penchant for keeping company with “scoundrels,” and therefore eventually declined to finance the prodigal's further education. This resulted in a flurry of letters from friends and family members arguing over Brisac's obligations and discussing what could be done for his maintenance while he (allegedly) pursued his studies, as well as a series of sharply worded expressions of dismay from Brisac père, a wealthy, French-born insurance executive. The senior Brisac had much to say to his son about American students abroad being notorious loafers, and concluded that “as you will have to carve out your future I must set you free” to pursue honorable work and pay off all accumulated debts. Brisac subsequently studied Latin and law in Tripoli, sold life insurance in Peru, and promoted various theatrical endeavors in America.
The bulk of these documents date ca. 1875–77, Brisac having been 19 years of age at their commencement. Most of the pieces are in English with some letters in German or French, plus a few documents and one small journal in Arabic; Brisac's mail went to addresses in Paris, Malta, San Francisco, Boston, Heidelberg, Lima, and other exotic locales. In addition to the letters, there are hotel and other bills, Christmas cards, newspaper clippings, a certified copy of the will of Felix Brisac along with a handwritten copy of the same, and printed documents connected to Brisac's studies at Santa Clara College (including diploma-style certificates of membership in the Dramatic Society, Philharmonic Cecilian Society, and Philhistorian Debating Society) and Ruprecht-Carolinschen Universität in Heidelberg. Photocopies of a few other documents related to Brisac's whereabouts (his international travel plans as filed with San Francisco, census reports, etc.) are also part of the collection.
Brisac was briefly married to actress Mary Shaw. An ardent, anonymous letter of admiration of her performance in “Ben Hur” (addressing her as Amrah, the name of her character), is present here, as are souvenirs of some of her other appearances, pieces of Shaw's finery (shoe buckles, a beautiful piece of beadwork appliqué from a dress or handbag, two other bits doubtless sentimentally retained), and letters from Brisac to “My own darling Mamie,” probably but not certainly Shaw.
Collection housed in library-style box; ost documents age-toned but otherwise in very good condition.
A rich gathering, evoking both the late 19th-century theatrical world and the life of a spendthrift young man with artistic and intellectual tastes or pretensions. (25359)

(Ecuador). A small collection of 13 items. Guayaquil, Quito, San José, & Lima, 1834–57.
$2975.00
The history of Ecuador during the first generation after achieving
independence from Spain was noteworthy for its ever-changing nature: politically
part of New Granada, then a separate country; yearnings to be part of Peru;
wars against Colombia for ownership of the Cauca region, and war against the
Galapagos Islands for ownership of the giant tortoises; the trading off of the
presidency between Flores and Rocafuerte; wild swings between rampant anti-clericalism
and amicable church-state relations; promulgation of several radically different
constitutions; and, finally, the institutionalization of political anarchy beginning
in 1845 following the forced exile of President Flores.
This offering contains original documents touching on many of these and
other matters. Do note, please, that this collection is being SOLD
AS A COLLECTION ONLY, with no extractions or mixing and matching
such as are offered elsewhere on this page.

Dramatic
Romance & Comic
Opera — With Hot Air Balloons!
(Playbills Theatres-Royal). Theatres-Royal. London, 1783–84. Folios. [1] f.
Each: $450.00
Bifolia. [2] ff.
Each: $1000.00

Featured plays include Romeo and Juliet, Douglas, The West Indian, and "a new comic opera" called Robin Hood; or, Sherwood Forest. Secondary attractions range from dances to minor dramatic works to pantomimes, with sheets for consecutive evenings showing how a main attraction might be paired with a comedy one night and a musical entertainment the next.
These theatrical ephemera are quite scarce: While 19th-century examples are fairly common, a check of ESTC found only a few scattered instances of 18th-century Theatre-Royal playbills, none with more than one holding.
"Mini-collections" of these playbills can be invoiced at the “collection” rates of: Five items, 10% off; ten items, 15% off; ALL items, 20% off. Shipping

(Spanish Legal Pleadings). An assemblage of 30 pleadings before the audiencias of the various kingdoms. Granada, elsewhere, ca. 1590 – ca. 1714. Folio. 299 ff.
$2250.00
A very good research collection.
While its temporal limits cover more than a century, in reality more than 90%
of the pleadings are dated between 1610 and 1640; the cases to which the pleadings
relate come from many, many regions of Spain and involve individuals of varying
economic and social classes, as well as towns and cities of divergent sizes
and political clout. The judicial questions involved are diverse: rights to
woodcutting, water, pasturage, passage, and citizenship; enforcement of judicial
sentences; judicial jurisdiction; vassalage; official responsibility; corruption;
taxation; contraband goods; dowries; executor responsibilities; and the thorny
question of ownership of priestly benefices when the endowment-holder has married
with papal permission and continues as a priest.
Typically, pleadings such as these were printed to the minimal standards
of "job printing," but most present here have interesting woodcut initials,
some historiated, and among them they are decorated with an interesting array
of type-ornaments; eight are begun with a good-size woodcut or engraving of
the Virgin, the Virgin and Child, or the Crucifixion, typically unsigned.
Usually there is no indication of where the item was printed, and dates must
be inferred from the contents or from the watermark of the paper.
Such
Spanish documents as these are rare in non-Spanish libraries.
All documents are removed from bound volumes, but, unless
otherwise noted, are still sewn. They are in good, usable condition, and are
unfoxed, with exceptions to these rules noted in the complete listing of the
collection—available upon request. Do note, please, that this collection
is being SOLD AS A COLLECTION ONLY,
with no extractions or mixing and matching such as are offered elsewhere on
this page.

From about 1820 through 1843 the Church of Scotland was in turmoil over the question of lay patronage and its implications regarding civil authority over the church; in 1843, after the “Ten Years’ Conflict” between the evangelical and moderate branches of the church, the issues were temporarily resolved by “the Disruption,” in which close to a third of the ministers of the Church of Scotland separated to form the Free Church of Scotland. The upheaval prompted the publication of numerous pamphlets and treatises on the controversy, and its effects continued to be felt in Scotland for many years afterward.
The collection contains works by many of the principal voices of the conflict.
The vast majority of the publications are from ca. 1840.
A
good research collection.
All items are in good to very good condition, disbound, a few
with library markings (stamps) but a few only. The strange glossy effect in
our “group photo” is the pamphlets' archival mylar folders, reflecting
light nothing worse, and nothing stranger!
