• First edition of Edward William Lane’s English translation, illustrated with numerous in-text wood engravings from designs by William Harvey. Lane, an Egyptologist and noted scholar of Arabic language and literature, chose to bowdlerize portions of the tales he found “objectionable” — those choices being themselves now interesting — but added extensive anthropological and cultural annotations, as well as explanations of many of his choices in translation and transliteration.
