First edition of Edward William Lane’s English translation,
illustrated with numerous in-text wood engravings from designs by William Harvey.
Lane, an Egyptologist and noted scholar of Arabic language and literature,
chose to bowdlerize portions of the tales he found “objectionable”
those choices being themselves now interesting but added extensive anthropological and cultural annotations, as well as explanations
of many of his choices in translation and transliteration.
